When choosing planters for landscaping projects, the material you select significantly impacts weight, durability, cost, and aesthetics. Two popular options are MGO (magnesium oxide) and concrete planters. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide.
Weight: MGO is Significantly Lighter
MGO planters are approximately 40-60% lighter than comparable concrete planters. This makes MGO planters much easier to transport, install, and rearrange. For large landscaping projects with hundreds of planters, the weight savings translate to lower shipping costs and faster installation.
Durability: Both Are Weather-Resistant
Both MGO and concrete planters are suitable for outdoor use and can withstand temperature variations, rain, and UV exposure. However, MGO planters have better freeze-thaw resistance in colder climates. Concrete planters can crack if water seeps into pores and freezes.
Aesthetics: MGO Offers More Design Flexibility
MGO planters can be molded into virtually any shape and texture, from smooth modern finishes to realistic stone and wood textures. Concrete planters tend to have a more limited range of shapes due to the heavier mold requirements. MGO also accepts a wider range of colors and finishes.
Cost: MGO Offers Better Value
While initial material costs are similar, the lower shipping weight of MGO planters reduces overall project costs. MGO planters are also less likely to crack during shipping, reducing replacement costs. For wholesale buyers, MGO planters typically offer better value per unit.
Conclusion
For most landscaping projects, MGO planters are the superior choice due to their lighter weight, greater design flexibility, better freeze-thaw resistance, and overall value. Concrete planters may be preferred for very large, permanent installations where extreme weight is not a concern.
